This chapter made me realize that Biochemistry is closely connected to medicine and that understanding it is important in becoming a good physician. I struggled to understand the concepts at first because I felt like I was starting from the beginning again. Since my previous Biochemistry experience was mostly through online learning, I knew that I had gaps in my foundation.
Still, this chapter encouraged me to take the subject seriously and be patient with myself as I relearn the basics.
I learned that water and pH may seem like simple concepts, but they play an important role in maintaining the body’s normal functions. I struggled a lot with understanding some of the concepts, especially when calculations and different relationships were involved. There were moments when I felt overwhelmed and questioned if I could keep up with the subject.
It reminded me that I need to strengthen my foundation instead of being afraid to admit that I do not understand something yet.
This chapter taught me about amino acids and how they serve as the building blocks of proteins. I struggled to remember the different structures, classifications, and properties because there were so many details to learn. I found myself repeatedly reviewing the structures just to become familiar with them.
Although it was difficult, I learned that understanding their characteristics makes memorization easier and that I cannot expect myself to remember everything after studying it only once.
I learned that proteins have a specific sequence of amino acids that determines their structure and function. I struggled with this chapter because there were many steps and concepts that I had to connect with one another. There were times when I felt like I understood one part but became confused when another concept was introduced.
This chapter taught me that Biochemistry requires more than memorization. I need to understand how each process works and how one concept connects to another.
I learned that proteins are not simply chains of amino acids but can fold into different levels of structure that are essential to their function. I struggled with distinguishing the primary, secondary, tertiary, and quaternary structures because of the many terms and interactions involved.
I had to visualize and review them repeatedly before they started making sense. This chapter made me appreciate how complex proteins are and how much detail exists even at the molecular level.
This chapter taught me how myoglobin and hemoglobin are involved in oxygen storage and transport, and how their structures affect their functions. I struggled to understand the differences between their oxygen-binding behaviors and the graphs associated with them. I had to go over the concepts several times before I could connect them to what actually happens in the body.
Despite the difficulty, I found it interesting to see how Biochemistry explains something as essential as how our body carries and uses oxygen.
I learned that enzymes make biological reactions happen more efficiently by lowering the activation energy. I struggled with understanding the mechanism of enzyme action because there were many terms and processes happening at the same time. Concepts such as the active site, substrate binding, and transition state were initially confusing to me.
I learned that taking the process step by step helps me understand it better instead of trying to memorize everything at once.
This was one of the chapters I found particularly challenging because it involved graphs, equations, Km, Vmax, and different concepts that I had to connect together. I struggled to understand what the values actually meant and how they related to enzyme activity. There were times when I knew the formula but still could not fully explain the concept behind it.
This taught me that I need to focus not only on memorizing formulas but also on understanding what the numbers and graphs are actually telling me.
This chapter taught me that enzyme activity is carefully regulated by the body to maintain balance and control different metabolic processes. I struggled with the different types of enzyme regulation because several mechanisms and terms were introduced, making them easy for me to mix up.
However, I learned that understanding the purpose of each mechanism makes the differences easier to remember. More than anything, this chapter reminded me that Biochemistry requires patience, repetition, and consistency.
Our first two quizzes were honestly some of the moments when I struggled the most. I remember feeling so overwhelmed that I even wanted to cancel the quizzes because I felt that I was not prepared enough. I studied, but I still had doubts about whether I truly understood the lessons.
The quizzes made me realize that knowing the material while studying is different from being able to recall and apply it under pressure. Although those experiences were difficult, they also showed me the areas where I needed to improve. Instead of letting those quizzes define my performance, I want to use them as a reminder of how much more I need to work on.
The long exam was another challenge for me. I genuinely did my best to prepare, and I tried to remember and understand as much as I could. However, despite my efforts, the result still felt like it was not enough. It was disappointing because I knew how much time and effort I had already put into studying.
Still, I am learning that doing my best does not always guarantee the result I want, and sometimes the only thing I can do is learn from the experience and come back better prepared.
The major exams were probably one of the biggest reminders that I still have a lot to learn. I gave my best and tried to prepare myself, but there were still moments during the exams when I realized that I was not as confident with the material as I wanted to be. It was frustrating to feel that my effort was not enough, especially when I knew I had been trying.
But I do not want one exam, or even several difficult exams, to make me believe that I cannot do this. I may have struggled, but I am still here, still learning, and still willing to improve.
Looking back at these chapters, quizzes, and exams, I can honestly say that Biochemistry has been one of the subjects that challenged me the most. There were many times when I felt lost, frustrated, and even questioned whether I was capable of keeping up. But I am also learning that struggling does not mean I am incapable. It simply means there are things I still need to understand.
My quizzes, long exam, and major exams may not have given me the results I hoped for, even after giving my best, but I refuse to let those experiences stop me. I may have fallen short this time, but I know myself well enough to say that I will bounce back. I will study harder, understand better, and keep going, because this is only one part of the journey toward becoming the physician I want to be.
